Knights of Columbus
The St. George Knights of Columbus Council 4123 was first chartered in 1955. The original and title is Holy Trinity Council, which included three parishes that formed the council: Saint George, Saint Matthew in the Woods, and Saint Francis Xavier. It is interesting to note that we still have some active members that were in the original group, and they are some of our more active members.
It was 1955 and a very good friend of mine told me about the benefits of belonging to the Knights of Columbus. Saint Francis in McKean had by far the most members, therefore our meetings were held in McKean in their newly built building which included a gym. I remember we would play basketball after some of our sessions. I belonged to Saint Matthew in the Woods, and I believe at that time I was the only active member from that parish. Membership continued to group and Saint George held a wide majority of the members and eventually the meeting site was changed.
The members from Saint George told me how great the grade school was. At that time, I had a son who was attending another school, and I had more four more that would be eventually be attending school, so I decided to move my present home within the boundaries of Saint George. To this day, I have certainly never regretted that move. All of my children and all of my grandchildren have graduated from Saint George School. With pride, I pleased that they received a quality faith filled Catholic education.
John, Knights of Columbus Active Member for 53 years.
Under the leadership of Monsignor Richard G. Mayer, the Knights of Columbus Council has undergone a rebirth. Since 2004, the council has been recruiting new members and working in the parish as needed. We now have about 60 active Knights, and we are always looking for more.
The mission of our council is to promote family life and vocations. We are constantly looking for new ways to further our mission. Please consider joining us in this endeavor. There are four degrees in the Knights of Columbus: Charity, Unity, Fraternalism, and Patriotism. There is no traditional uniform associated with the Knights.
To be a Knight, you must be a practicing male Catholic and at least18 years of age and committed to being involved with the community, supporting the local Catholic church, and enhancing one's own faith and family life. There are ten meetings per year and are held in the Franklin Room on the first Thursday of each month at 7p.m.
